Takigyo requires you to stand under a 23m waterfall. It was originally a religious practice or ceremony. Takigyo is an experience that will test your limits and allows you to go through mental -training and self-discovery. There is an organization that conducts Takigyo for everyone at a mountain, about 1 and a half hours away from Tokyo.

Takigyo is a religious ceremony and there are rituals that the locals participate in. However, if you are uncomfortable to participate in such activities, it is not a requirement for you to be involved in the rituals. You are also free to take videos and photos.
Guaranteed to be one of the most memorable, thrilling and peaceful moments in your life!

This tour starts early in the morning and finishes around noon which is perfect for early risers. Shin matsuda station is where the tour ends and is only 15 minutes away from JR Odawara station. This is convenient for people going to western parts of Japan such as Hakone, Kyoto or Osaka. Also if you have an activated JR Pass for the date of Takigyo, you can use the Shinkansen, bullet train to get to Odawara.

Would you like to have an unforgettable experience in Japan?
I am Japanese born and bred but have spent happy years in Canada and the UK bringing up children and introducing Japanese culture/language at local schools.
I love hiking, traveling, eating and interacting with people so guiding is a perfect job for me. ( I'm a Government Certified Guide Interpreter.) I can take you to all the must-see places as well as quaky places in and around Tokyo. Making a plastic food sample, joining a bon dance at a summer festival, hiking at Mt. Takao followed by a relaxing hot spring bath....There are so many things to offer!
You will have a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and a better experience, if you have a friendly professional guide like me!

Takigyo was an amazing experience that I have never had before. Takigyo took place in Kanagawa prefecture, which is right next to Tokyo. I had to take a train from Shinjuku station in Tokyo to Shinmatsuda station in Kanagawa. The train ride was about 80 minutes long but it felt really short because I could observe beautiful nature of Japan that I could not see in Tokyo.
As soon as I got to the Takigyo place, I changed my cloth to Karate robe that was provided by there. Along with about 10 other people, we walked to the shrine next to the waterfall. We exercised together to warm our bodies up and put salt and sake over our bodies to purify our bodies and souls. After the purifying, we prayed at the shrine next to the waterfall for our safety. Then by groups of people, we went into the waterfall to experience Takigyo. The water was cold at first, but after about 10 seconds my body got used to it. I stood under the waterfall for 90 seconds. Although it was only 90 seconds, it felt really long. There were lots of thoughts going in my mind in that 90 seconds. After I got out of the waterfall I really felt like my body and soul was purified. It was my first time participating in meditation practice and meditating under Japanese waterfall was a unique and amazing experience. I would definitely recommend this activity to people who wants to experience something unique in Japan. Again, it was an amazing experience.

When I first come to Japan, I knew I wanted to try a lot of new experiences. One was to experience the culture, nature and marvel at the history, and the second experience, was to feel like a Karate Master that would go through tough thrilling trails. Through the help of WOW-U, I was introduced to Takigyo, once I saw the video of it, I knew that this is one of the adventures where I can experience being a Japanese Master. Takigyo is a process in which you stand under a waterfall, it may not sound too difficult but when your standing under a 30 m waterfall with freezing cold water, trust me it is a challenge. I stood Under the waterfall and at first I thought I was going to stop breathing, but constant screaming helped control my breathing. I stood under their for 1 min and 30 sec, When I did it a second time it was as if I was at peace and the fresh spring water was healing my body. I loved every second of that experience, and recommended it to all my family. Hopefully when I come to Japan again with my family, Takigyo is the first activity on our list. I recommend anyone on to participate, especially if you are a thrill seeker. If your not into much of a thrill, you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery and have a good laugh at all the screaming.
